Team Wat-Kyk-Jy - Birding Big Day 2016
 
Our Birding Big Day started in somewhat wet conditions as we headed out to our first few spots at 2am. The stop-start rain made finding nocturnal birds sightly difficult, and after a slow start we managed to tick Western Barn Owl, Southern White-faced Owl, Pearl-spotted Owlet, Rufous-cheeked Nightjar and Fiery-necked Nightjar before heading off to a hill for the dawn chorus. ... Eastern Cape Trip Report (Charles & Lois Hardy)
 
The Eastern Cape offers some interesting birding opportunities with many varied birding habitats and some endemic species we still needed to see, so we decided to travel to the Garden Route. We broke the long journey with a most enjoyable overnight stay in Smithfield. After an unexpectedly good dinner at Nick's Place B&B it was up early in search of a Grey-winged Francolin (pictured below) which we located on a farm road not far from town before breakfast. ... Die dag se weer was winderig en koud tot en met so 10:00 se kant, wat gemaak het dat die voels tot laat nog besig was met hul geroep en soek na kos. Die area is baie droog en reen is dringend nodig daar en so ook die res van ons gebied. Dit het natuurlik 'n invloed gehad op die spesiale spesies wat gesien is en ook die wat nie gesien is nie. Die doel van die dag was om die Oranjevlerkmelba(Orange-winged Pytilia) te kry wat seker een van die moeilikste spesies is om te sien in Suid-Afrika. ... [read more]

"Bly Stil, come on people, Shut up! You need to stop talking!" these words flowing from Conrads' pursed lips; he was right this was the third time we had trudged through the dry, dusty and chocking Limpopo river bed. The group's mood was one of resignation and inadvertently we had started talking loudly and we had become distracted from our mission. The day before our little band, "the famous four" had pushed open the heavy metal gates that separate Botswana from the Republic to view the bone dry Limpopo River, our quest finding the secretive Pel's fishing owl(Visuil). ...
