Report on the Photographic Bird Race - 2015
 
During the chilly early morning hours of Youth Day (16 June) some very enthusiastic birding teams met outside the General Piet Joubert School to receive their lists of cryptic clues from the race organiser. Limpopo Birding Routes goes to the Tourism Indaba
 
The Limpopo Birding Routes was represented by Lisa Martus, David Letsoalo and Andre Steenkamp (a birder and environmental educator who was running Wakkerstroom and is now based in Durban) at the Tourism Indaba in Durban this year. The Limpopo Stand was better than ever with beautiful signboards and a professional look. Our position was excellent and we were able to entice a larger number of passing trade to the stalls. ... For he's a jolly good fellow - Mokgalaje turns (at least) 10!
 
You would be forgiven if you can't remember what you did on 24 May 2005. Well I know I was in the Polokwane Nature Reserve trying to catch and ring Short-clawed Larks. I succeeded in ringing a male Short-clawed Lark in the Polokwane Nature Reserve on that day. Little did I know at the time that that very same bird would one day rewrite record books. Polokwane centurions - 110 bird species in a suburban garden
 
We moved into our house in the Polokwane suburb of Welgelegen in February 1999. From day 1 I kept a bird list, and not long after Daniel joined the family in 2002, he also started pointing out birds. He is now the official list keeper and I do the vetting. We record all birds we see in or from our garden. Earlier this year we joined the Garden Bird Centurion Club when we saw our 100th bird in the garden - a Yellow-fronted Tinkerbird. ... [read more]
